Rather, you’re going to need to memorize each of the above f-values (aka “f-stops”) as categories. In other words, do not start mentally comparing these whole numbers to decimals, or trying to make a relationship between these numbers using math. The key to understanding this all right away is to immediately disregard these numbers as any sort of actual numerical value in relation to one another. The “whole” stops of f/5.6 and f/8 have two in between points that you can dial your camera for. For example, between 5.6 and 8 there is f/6.3 and f/7.1, too. Between each of these values, most modern cameras will allow you to set values 1/3 of the way between. The above chart lists all “common” aperture values, as denoted by the corresponding f-values. Since this is a profile graphic, it’s a little difficult to understand what the opening actually looks like, so the below graphic shows the head-on view of a lens aperture.Īs you can see, for each diameter of aperture there is a corresponding “f” value. The two small black lines represent the outer openings of the aperture. A camera’s aperture is basically the diameter of the opening within the lens that allows light to pass through to then reach the sensor (or film, in the good ol’ days).Ībove is a graphic of a side profile of a typical SLR camera, with lens pointing towards the right. To start with, let’s define what a camera aperture is, and what the f-stop designation actually means. If you’re an enthusiastic amateur at photography and haven’t yet gotten past the “auto” mode on your camera, this is the best place to begin with in expanding your photographic prowess and understanding – by choosing your own aperture to shoot with. Remember the 2006 Australian Open? He presented the trophy to a weeping Roger Federer, who rested his snuffly nose and red eyes on Laver's shoulder, a moment that became instantly iconic. Popping up in the front row at Melbourne Park these past few years, he's almost become the silent face of the tournament – the one who reminds Australia of its history in the game – but it's easy to forget such visits home were once infrequent. What you are witnessing is a genial old man wading into a reverent sea of adoration he did not fully know existed, one that will continue washing warmly over him through 2019, the golden anniversary of his defining achievement in tennis, the year he became the only person in history to complete two Grand Slams (winning all four major tournaments – the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open – in a calendar year). You might have seen him at an event or two recently – the standing ovations are hard to miss. All of which means he stayed mostly within mournful shadow for around 15 years until, slowly, he began inching back into the light of public life. Upon emerging from rehabilitation, his wife Mary fell ill with an array of her own crippling, cruel ailments, meaning their two traumas virtually overlapped, Laver doting on her every need for almost a decade before she died in 2012. Twenty years ago, you see, Laver suffered a serious stroke – one that all but killed him. It turns out, however, that his avoidance of the spotlight owes precious little to country-boy shyness or the magnanimous modesty of a champ, and instead to a long and painful run of grave personal misfortune. He's not quite so reclusive as the late Sir Donald Bradman (a man who, in many ways, the world never fully knew) but nor has he graced the retirement stage as eagerly as, say, Pelé, or Jack Nicklaus, or Michael Jordan, or the late Muhammad Ali – and make no mistake, Laver is comfortably in that immortal club. That last part is crucial because Laver, now 80, has become one of those mythic figures in the global sporting firmament. We cover the bones of the biography that built a tennis champion – probably the greatest of all time (more on that later) – but more importantly, we discuss what's been happening in his life lately. Over three hours together, we enjoy a drive around his posh hilly neighbourhood in suburban Carlsbad, lunch at a sandwich shop in a strip mall, and kick back for a nice rest in the shade of his backyard. Over the next hundred or so shanks and cuts and occasional flush strikes, the still wiry and ever-ruddy Laver proves a great golfer and greater company. He flashes a grin: "You're gonna kill someone." "I might have a hit," he says, turning from my shame. Our heads swivel silently in sync, together tracking the uncooperative Titleist as it drifts to the right, a vicious skyward slice soaring over the boundary netting of the driving range and onto the aluminium roof of a faraway outbuilding, where it crashes. "Now's your chance to go whack."Īnd so I cradle the TaylorMade driver I bought only yesterday, and you better believe I wallop that ball triumphantly long and hard and high and … oh dear, wait a minute … wide. "Well, we're here," says Laver, sighing contentedly, squinting into the sun at La Costa country club. Only my rusty swing, performed at a driving range in front of a designated National Living Treasure – a man with a statue, a stadium and an international tennis tournament named after him – could spoil this moment. And the sky, well, the sky is that wondrous geo-specific hue of Pacific Ocean azure and misty heat haze that might as well be its own trademarked Pantone. The sunshine is burnishing every coppery ridge and mesa in the coastal desert north of San Diego. The warm breeze on the American west coast is perfumed with sage and buckwheat. How about we actually do something for our interview, I asked his manager, instead of chatting in an office?Īnd I should be giddy that my plan has come to pass. I negotiated the creation of this moment. Waiting for me to hit the first golf ball of the morning. Strong sales of shirts with logos on them, a sign of brand health? Huh? What about the lack of interest - for years - in what Gap is selling in the other 95% of its stores’ floor? To me this is a clear sign that the relevance of the brand and even more importantly the strong emotional connection with and pride in the brand like Gap,” Peck told analysts on a February 28 conference call. As challenging as 2018 was, logo sales which to me are an indication of the equity of the brand were up 11% globally. “Our market research strongly supports the view that Gap remains a relevant brand with strong emotional equities. Shoppers now go into a mall, reminisce about the Gap as they walk by a former location, and buy clothing at H&M, American Eagle or any of the remaining department stores.Ī window display at a Gap clothing store is seen Thursday, Aug. In effect, the closings have pushed the brand further back in the recesses of shopper’s minds. Gap has closed hundreds of stores globally over the past five years, yet the brand scarcity that has created in markets hasn’t translated to improved sales. On the heels of another disappointing holiday season, Gap said in late February it would shutter 230 Gap brand stores. The 5% same-store sales drop was worse than the 1% decline seen in 2017. Gap’s global same-store sales tanked 5% in 2018, continuing a stretch of annual declines. If higher tariffs on clothing was the only thing Gap had to worry about. “ is not a solution when you have weak brands that can’t drive traffic,” SW Retail Advisors President Stacey Widlitz said on Yahoo Finance’s The First Trade. But one that Gap has not proven adept at for eons, which calls into question if the brand will even be around 10 years from now. An apparel company - which Gap is unless told otherwise - has to grow sales to stick around. Rather, it’s a short-term elixir designed to hopefully pump up the brand’s profit metrics and grab some investors ahead of a spin-off. More on those efforts will probably be shared when Gap announces first quarter earnings Thursday.īut simply closing stores of an apparel brand that probably can no longer consistently grow sales (if at all) isn’t a long-term savior. Spin off Old Navy and keep on closing underperforming Gap stores. Next up: quickly digging the six-foot hole.Īfter years of product miscues, weak sales and pressured margins at the hands of rising online apparel competition and mall rents, Gap management has settled on a strategy to “fix” what ills the once iconic brand. Smith’s poetry collection was selected by francine j. Instead she pleads, “Tell me the formula.” (pg 70) The reader must sift through all the filth and beauty to find what they are looking for, as Smith doesn’t give them any answers. As the mystical cover art of Cephalopod implies, the reader is swimming in Smith’s dense stream of consciousness, such a collage of images is presented, probed, and posed. Time begins to lapse back as the metaphysical reflections all come to an accumulation in the last section. The shocking imagery of swallowing foxglove juxtaposed with an octopus coaxing her bones from the sea floor feels too romantically dark for this point in the witty, philosophical collection. The tone also shifts especially with the title poem, “Self-Portrait with Cephalopod and Digitalis Purpurea.” Smith discusses the serious topic of suicide in budding pubescent girls. Smith switches poetic style from enjambed lines and short stanzas to dense prose and heavy narrative. The jump in time isn’t the only difference in section three. The reader travels back in time with Smith as she contemplates her childhood, especially growing up in Washington state and how its geography shaped her as a person. Smith comes to find more solace in sandy shores contemplating creation through broken shells than an almighty designer orchestrating destruction. Several poems are even written in a religious form: psalm, parable, spell, and meditation. Smith queries and quarrels with a higher power in the second section of Cephalopod, “Dear wrecker / in the ruin, dear great keeper of forecasts / and dust” (pg 29). If the title doesn’t hook the reader, the anti-Ode format will: “the internet, / it knows me, it says / recommended for you :” (pg 10). “Photos of Pig That Appears to Have Blue Fat Beneath Skin Shared on Social Media” is an exemplary poem. She assesses how humans have become so involved in technology, media, and capitalism that humans themselves conflict with nature. What is our position in this world? Smith plunges headfirst into this immense question requesting the reader to reconsider boundaries of society and nature in the first section. Each section Smith takes a deep dive into aspects of her life and experiences with death spanning through time: current, past, and future. After the opening poem, Cephalopod is divided into four reflective sections. This dark humor is sustained throughout Smith’s collection, every so often shining through all her existential crisis. At the same time there’s still this comedic desire to find joy as Smith adorns herself with “pants the color of a sea cucumber” (pg 1) and covers her “mammary glands / with a boneless bioluminescence.” (pg 2) The reader also wants to put on their “cephalopod ring” (pg 1) as if to click theirs with Smith and shout, “Wonder Twin powers, activate!” (pg 1) Because even though the world may end, wearing an octopus shirt can do wonders to remind oneself there are things still worth living for. With all these building concerns, the reader senses the impending dread along with Smith. Immediately after Gallagher’s quote the reader is dropped into Smith’s first poem, “Ode to Super Friends and Nature Television.” Written in a scattered stream of consciousness, Smith begins to list the things she can’t control from “birds with nowhere to land” (pg 1) to “jungle ants with parasitic skewered brains” (pg 1) to the world’s wobbling axis to stillbirth to ocean levels rising. This is the exact feeling Smith’s poems invoke: the ever presence of death while one keeps breathing in everyday life. Due to Gallagher’s clever line breaks “die” and “live” are stacked on top of one another, appearing in complete tandem. You / could live forever.” Kathryn Smith has chosen a wise quote to enter her third collection of poetry. Self-Portrait with Cephalopod opens with a three-line quote from Tess Gallagher, “You / could die out there. So unfortunately, I don't think there is going to be a solution to "make this work". I lived with these limitations for a while - but loosing support on the Pi is a deal-breaker for me. Even in this day and age, they still don't support any form of two-factor or multi-factor authentication (2FA / MFA). Security of the CrashPlan platform is questionable at best. For example, the fact that they still don't support backing up timestamp metadata on Linux platforms (but only on Windows) still leaves me scratching my head. I do plan on making a blog post out of this at Opens a new window, including many additional details. I did contact Code42 regarding this - and they made it very clear that they have no intent to provide support for any ARM-based platforms. (There are Intel versions of Synology that should continue to work.) Unfortunately, the entire community would now appear to be at a loss - Raspberry Pi, Synology, and others alike. Another common use-case, also dependent on ARM support, was for integrated use on the Synology NAS platform - basically running CrashPlan on a disk array with a lot of storage, which made a lot of sense. Running an older version of CrashPlan is also not feasible, as it always attempts to auto-upgrade itself to the latest version.Running CrashPlan on the Raspberry Pi was never officially supported, but there were a lot of people doing it, with a lot of community support around it. Since I doubt anyone will be seeing the source code for CrashPlan's own binaries anytime soon, this is probably a deal-breaker. Previous native binaries included with CrashPlan had the same issue - but they were open-source, and ARM-compatible drop-in replacements were available. However, with the latest 4.8 update of CrashPlan, Code42 (the CrashPlan owner company) took it upon themselves to include their own binary code (libc42archive.so), which is not ARM-compatible. As CrashPlan is based on Java, and Java supports ARM quite well - this really shouldn't be an issue. However, the running software must also be written to support ARM. This is perfect for something like the Pi and an always-on usage, as ARM is very power-efficient over x86. the traditional "Intel / AMD" x86 architecture. It seems that all of us will now be discontinuing our subscriptions and looking for replacement solutions as part of the recent changes here.Īt-issue is that the Raspberry Pi runs on ARM chips, vs. Several of us also paid for the CrashPlan subscriptions for the additional features. I'm in the same boat - to the extent that each of my extended family members had a Pi with an external USB hard drive in a safe place in their homes, dedicated to receiving remote CrashPlan backups from their own devices as well as their extended friends and family. I really do like CrashPlan, how it works and what it does, but I really do need it to run to my Pi. Multi-Platform, (Windows, Linux (X64 & ARM) Mobile)īackup to other machines, eg, cross backup all machines on account. I have been using these instructions: Opens a new windowĭoes anyone know either how to make this work, or an alternative solution that would work instead. Recently however CrashPlan has made a change to the software that the current tweeks I have been using are no longer working. I know this is unsupported, and after every install you have to run a few tweeks. I tried on the 1, this did not have enough resources, but the 3 is more powerful than the Laptop I was running on. The Outer Worlds 2 is likely years away from release still, so fans may not want to hold their breath for any updates in 2023. It's also actively developing The Outer Worlds 2, the sequel to its popular sci-fi RPG that launched a few years ago. There are rumors that an Xbox Games Showcase of some kind could be held in early 2023, and if those rumors are true, perhaps Avowed will make an appearance.Īvowed isn't the only game that Obsidian Entertainment has in the oven. It would be surprising if 2023 came and went with no news on Avowed, so hopefully fans are treated to an update soon. Very little has been shown of Avowed since its initial announcement, so fans are understandably hungry for more information. Though Obsidian was given little time to complete the project, it would become one of. Set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Avowed seems to be Obsidian's answer to The Elder Scrolls. Avowed is a first person RPG, which has proven to be an incredibly popular formula throughout the years. However, when one considers that first-person RPG Avowed was first announced all the way back in 2020, it seems highly likely that fans will be treated to an update of some kind in 2023. Avowed will be Obsidians first big game for Microsoft since. Grounded will launch as a free-to-play title on Windows PC and Xbox One.Grounded updates are a virtual guarantee for 2023, but it's less clear if Obsidian will also have news to share about some of its other games that are in development. Obsidian Entertainment has revealed Avowed, a brand new first-person RPG set in the studios Pillars of Eternity world. It shrinks players down to the size of a grain of rice, pitting them against insects and other monsters in a typical suburban backyard. Obsidian is also working on at least one other video game, an open-world survival game called Grounded. The Fallout-inspired game went on to win multiple awards, including here at Polygon where we ranked it among the top 10 games of 2019. But Obsidian still had one game of its own left to launch, the first-person action-RPG The Outer Worlds. Avowed is a first-person RPG set in the world of Pillars of Eternity, announced during the recent Xbox Games Showcase. And thats basically all the information that was revealed during the show. Microsoft took notice, and acquired the company in late 2018. The Irvine, California-based developer is riding high after years spent reinvigorating the isometric RPG genre with Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. The announcement was made during today’s Xbox Games Showcase. The first-person, sword and sorcery role-playing game takes place in the world of Eora, the same setting as the popular Pillars of Eternity series. Obsidian Entertainment’s next game is called Avowed. It also would have been better if some of the later games were added into the bundle.
